Recently, while doing some serious site editing, we got fed up with the problem of all our own hits distorting our analytics data. We found the same solution from Justins Cutronis blog, regarding a cookie and filters, that you mention. But we wanted an easier way to set the cookie on any site that we are working on, without needing to upload files to the site.
So we created a bookmarklet to set the exclusion cookie.
It also works for both Urchin & pageTracker.
You can find it at http://www.techmale.com
I hope that helps.
